WHY “CONVICTION” SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN DECISION MAKING

Daily we are faced with a never ending task, the task of decision making. For us to live, relate with people, work and perform humanly pertinent activities, we have to make decisions all the time.

Decision making usually have resultant actions. These actions create outcomes that can influence our entire life in diverse ways. That is how important decision making is.

By preference and out of necessity, we make simple everyday choices like deciding what to do, where to go, what to say and how to say it, what to eat, what to wear and how to react to things, to more heavyweight decisions like the kind of career to pursue, who to marry, whether to relocate or not, deciding to quit a job and move on.

Choosing to forgive, choosing to be more patient with other individuals, deciding to see the needs of others and be helpful, deciding to be sincere to one’s self and live as one believes, deciding to let go of fears and do what makes one happy and fulfilled.

Whatever our choices are, it will determine how things will turn out for us now and in the future.

Even as we make these decisions, one thing we should learn to rely on is our conviction especially when we are unsure of what to do. Do you have a conviction about that decision you intend to make? Could it be that you are yet to decide because you are not convinced? What is your heart saying?

Having a conviction about a decision intended to be made entails having a deep sense of surety that making that move or reaching that decision will yield the best result.

Conviction is sometimes described as a feeling but it is more than a feeling. It is a mental affirmation, a push to reach a decision or to take an action. It is overlooking the prevailing conditions and trusting one’s decisions to be worth it.

Our conviction is a reflection of our inner knowing and our belief of possibility. It is the self-assurance of being able to achieve what we truly desire.

Of all the things you consider when making decisions like the relevance and benefits of that decision; the resultant change or effect; what it will cost or require, conviction is one important factor to consider.

When we rely on our conviction in decision making, regardless of how things turn out, there is a warmth we feel knowing that we made the choice independently and wholeheartedly.

In instances where internal and external resistances and obstacles surface, your conviction can keep you energized to finish the tasks you have set for yourself.

Conviction can build and energize your passion. When we are convinced about a decision or an action, believing it will produce great results, we become really passionate about taking actions and seeing that we produce the desired result.

Conviction creates a positive internal feeling within us. This positive feeling builds optimism, deep understanding of purpose and self-trust.

Conviction helps you block out societal standards and expectations that are in conflict with the decision you intend to reach, your desires and your goals especially if they are things that resonate with your vision for your life.

Trusting one’s conviction is not simple, it is something that needs to be learnt, mastered and trusted overtime.

Learning to trust your conviction will require the following;

  • Listening to your heart often
  • Trusting yourself to choose right whenever you need to reach a decision
  • Exercising faith in your choices
  • Accepting the outcome of your decisions and learning from it
  • Having the Understanding that things can either turn out positive or negative.

‘Your Conviction’ is not the ultimate choice for making all decisions about your life but it is a vital tool and it should be explored and mastered.
